First Breath Birth & Wellness is pleased to offer personalized healthcare throughout a woman’s life span. If you would like to know more about what we have to offer or about our midwives, we invite you to contact us. We offer these options for care:
Birth at Home, Birth Center, or Hospital
Clients receiving prenatal care from our midwives, who are experiencing a healthy pregnancy, may choose to give birth at home or in one of our lovely birth suites. We specialize in water birth and in tailoring each birth experience to the needs and dreams of the family. Our out-of-hospital birth care begins in early labor and extends for several hours after the birth, when mother and baby have recovered from their work, and the new family is ready for their “babymoon”.
For mothers and babies who require hospital care for birth, we are pleased to partner with Missouri Baptist Medical Center. Our privileges there allow us to provide prenatal care and the birth experience that mothers need or want, even if they have a risk factor that makes hospital birth necessary. If a mother desires midwifery care but plans to use pain relief that is only available in the hospital, such as an epidural, we can accommodate the wishes of these mothers as well. Our collaborating physician Dr Jeffrey Mormol provides care to mothers requiring cesarean birth or for other conditions which fall outside of the scope of midwifery practice, in partnership with our midwives. At the hospital, your midwife will provide you with one-on-one support throughout active labor, birth, and the important first hour after birth. We have worked with the pediatric staff to allow our mothers and babies to return home as early as six hours after an uncomplicated childbirth if they prefer.
The midwives of First Breath specialize in caring for women who wish to labor or give birth in water. At the center, you may use one of our spacious built-in birth tubs. At home, you have the option of using your own large bath tub or renting a birth pool. For more information on water birth, we recommend this site: http://waterbirth.org

During prenatal care, every woman receives information about breastfeeding, and plenty of time is given to address questions or concerns. At the time of birth, your midwife and nurse will assist you in initiating breastfeeding as soon as your newborn shows signs of readiness, usually within the first 30-60 minutes after birth. In addition to our midwives and nurses who are all skilled and passionate about supporting women and babies in their breastfeeding relationship, we are pleased to be able to refer our clients to an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Molly Ottolini, who can be reached at 636-236-1852. We also offer classes, home visits, and in-office consultations to help moms succeed in their breastfeeding goals. Families who do not give birth at First Breath are welcome to take advantage of our breastfeeding support as well.
The time prior to becoming pregnant is very important to the health of both mother and baby. We offer counseling, information and lab testing to ensure that your pregnancy gets off to the best start possible.
Free urine pregnancy tests are available by appointment.
In the midwifery model of care, prenatal care is a collaboration between the mother, her loved ones, and the midwife. Prenatal visits include lots of education, routine screening labs, and plenty of time for the midwife to get to know mom and baby and their individual health needs. All along the way, families will be given the information they need to make choices about their pregnancy, birth and early parenting experience. Prenatal visits are generally 30-60 minutes in length. Our midwives see their clients on about the same schedule as obstetricians, every 4 weeks in early pregnancy, every 2 weeks from 28-36 weeks, and every week from 37 weeks to birth.
Our midwives have training and experience in limited obstetric ultrasound. We can confirm pregnancy dates, evaluate threatened miscarriage, and confirm baby's position. This service does not replace scans performed by registered sonographers to diagnose anomalies. Full anatomy scans and other medical evaluations are available as needed or by client request, through referral to an ultrasound provider, either independent or hospital-based.
Postpartum and Newborn care
The time immediately following birth is full of change, wonder, and a little bit of a learning curve! To help guide families through this exciting time, we offer home visits within 48 hours of each birth, unless the family lives an exceptional distance from the birth center, in which case we ask them to make local arrangements or come to us for the follow up visit. Our midwives are available at all times by phone, email, or in person throughout the weeks following birth, and will visit with the family at 1-2 weeks and 4 weeks after the birth. During these visits we assess mother and baby’s health, family adjustment, and breastfeeding, as well as answering questions and connecting families with any needed resources.
Well Woman Care
Our midwives are experts in women’s health throughout life. We offer Pap smears, family planning, breast care, menopause care, and other services to enhance the wellness of women at any age.
